Mayim Bialik makes a Facebook pitch to light an Independence Day torch in Israel

(JTA) — Actress Mayim Bialik wants to light a torch on Mount Herzl for Independence Day.

For the second year in a row, one of the 12 torches lit by important Israelis at the annual Independence Day ceremony to open the 24-hour celebration will be reserved for a member of Diaspora Jewry.

Last year the Diaspora torch was lit jointly by Michael Steinhardt, co-founder of Taglit-Birthright Israel, and Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Names swirling around for this year include Bialik, Ivanka Trump and Alan Dershowitz.

George W. Bush to attend launch of Jewish Agency institute in NY

(JTA) — The Jewish Agency is launching an institute in New York to prepare Israeli emissaries for their service.

The Shlichut Institute, which will be launched Wednesday, will provide the emissaries, or shlichim, with training, tools and technology before they serve, as well during and after.

Natan Sharansky, the outgoing chairman of the Jewish Agency, will serve as the founding chair of the institute. The launch will be part of a special event in New York celebrating the end of Sharansky’s nine-year tenure as chairman of the Executive Committee.

Ruderman Foundation pulls video criticizing Poland’s Holocaust law

(JTA) – The Ruderman Family Foundation, an American Jewish philanthropic organization, has removed a video from YouTube that criticizes Poland’s new law on rhetoric about the Holocaust.

The video posted Wednesday morning was part of a campaign urging the United States to suspend its ties with Poland over the law that criminalizes blaming the Polish nation or state for Nazi crimes.

US ambassador to Israel reportedly says evicting settlers ‘could lead to civil war’

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Evicting hundreds of thousands of Jewish settlers from the West Bank “could lead to civil war in Israel,” U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman told American Jewish leaders.

His remarks were first tweeted and reported on Israel’s Channel 10 by journalist Barak Ravid, who said he received the remarks from three participants at the meeting.

Friedman spoke Monday night during an off-the-record briefing in Jerusalem for about 100 American Jewish leaders at a meeting of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish American Organizations.

The U.S. Embassy and the Presidents Conference disputed the report.

Israeli army beefs up West Bank presence following murders of two rabbis

(JTA) — The Israeli army has beefed up its presence in the West Bank following the slayings of two rabbis there in recent weeks.

Three additional battalions were deployed in the area starting Wednesday amid concerns that the deadly attacks in the area signal a new wave of terrorism, the Israel Hayom daily reported.

Itamar Ben-Gal of the Har Bracha settlement was gunned down on Feb. 5. Rabbi Raziel Shevach of the Havat Gilad settlement was killed on Jan. 9.
