(JTA) — Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is under fire from some parts of the Palestinian world for his decision to attend the World Cup final in Moscow amid increased tension between Israel and Gaza.
Abbas, who will attend the final on Sunday, met on Saturday at the Kremlin with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I’m glad of the opportunity to tell you about the contact we have had with your neighbors, and leaders of various countries,” Putin told Abbas, according to Russian news sources.
“I know that the situation in the region is difficult and we are grateful that…
(JTA) — Jews in Russia’s Tatarstan region are objecting to a new ice cream called “Poor Jews.”
The ice cream cone, announced last month by the Slavitsa company in Naberezhnye Chelny, 600 miles east of Moscow, is wrapped in an image of Israel’s flag.
Leonid Shteinberg, a leader of the Jewish community in Naberezhnye Chelny, has called the name “racist” and demanded its production and sale be halted, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.
The city prosecutor’s office says it will investigate the complaints.
In a social media post announcing the ice cream’s launch on Feb. 28, the company describes…
MOSCOW (JTA) — Growing up in a working-class family in Russia’s Far East, Sergei Aryeh Zolotov knew the French Riviera only from what he’d seen in James Bond movies.

Luckily for Zolotov, he didn’t need to worry about any of that. All he had to do to visit the famed beaches of Cote d’Azur was to…

Stretching across 3.5 acres between Heroes’ Square and Vajdahunyad Castle, the Budapest City Park Ice Rink draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the country each winter. They come for the Christmas market, the winter festival, and the promise of smooth ice and affordable skate rentals.
It’s an enormous and enormously popular attraction, so City Park Ice Rink is busy nearly every day with the Christmas…
JERUSALEM (JTA) — U.S. National Security Council officials arrived in Israel for talks with their Israeli counterparts.
Representatives of other security agencies are also participating Tuesday in the discussions, which are focused on the recent U.S.-Russia cease-fire agreement for Syria as well as on Iran.
The agreement, announced in a joint U.S.-Russian statement Saturday, calls for “the reduction and ultimate elimination” of foreign fighters from southern Syria, including Iranian troops and proxies. However, it does not set a timetable.
According to an Israeli official, militias would be allowed to maintain positions as close as 3 to 4…
