Fans unfollow Dutch actress for vacationing in Israel

AMSTERDAM (JTA) — One of the Netherlands’ best-known actresses said hundreds of people unfollowed her on social media because she posted pictures from her visit to Israel.

Victoria Koblenko, an award-winning movie, television and theater actress and journalist with 151,000 followers on Instagram, invited others to unfollow her as well on the social network, saying in a Jan. 3 post from the Old City of Jerusalem that she has no interest in the attention of people who “assume something about my political inclination based on my holiday destination.”

Koblenko, 37, noted in the same post that the Middle East is…

Swedish state TV ties Trump’s Jerusalem recognition to ‘incredibly strong Jewish lobby’

(JTA) — Sweden’s main public broadcaster apologized for an article that tied President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital to the strength of the “Jewish Lobby.”

In a broadcast Wednesday immediately following Trump’s address about Jerusalem, the broadcaster SVT asserted that the “Jewish Lobby in the US is incredibly strong,” and said the lobby “has championed this issue for a long time.”

“It was an unfortunate choice of words that immediately was corrected by our senior news commentator,” Charlotta Friborg, executive editor and publisher SVT News, told JTA in an email.

Viewers had complained online that the assertion promoted…

Israel’s only liberal arts college has a Zionist mission

JERUSALEM (JTA) – From the rooftop of Shalem College, students have a sweeping view of the Old City of Jerusalem. The golden-topped Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine, sits atop the Temple Mount, where the ancient Jewish temple once stood.

Downstairs in their classrooms, students study the mount from a variety of perspectives. They discuss the clashing Jewish and Muslim claims to the site, of course. But they also examine the intra-Jewish disagreements over the significance of the holy site that get at fundamental questions about the very purpose of Zionism.

The leaders of Shalem, Israel’s first liberal…

UNESCO passes controversial motion calling Hebron ‘endangered heritage site in Palestine’

(JTA) — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, passed in a secret ballot a Palestinian-led motion calling Hebron an “endangered heritage site” in “Palestine” despite protests by Israel and Jewish groups.

Critics of the resolution, passed in a vote in Krakow, Poland on Friday, said it accepts the Muslim and Palestinian version of the ancient city’s history and denies its historic and religious importance to Jews and Christians.

A UNESCO advisory panel also said the resolution gives “little recognition” to Hebron’s Jewish and Christian associations.

Before the vote, Israel’s foreign ministry and Jewish groups urged the members of UNESCO’s World…

UNESCO World Heritage Council condemns Israeli actions in Jerusalem

(JTA) — The United Nations’ cultural agency voted to condemn Israelis actions in Jerusalem.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization’s World Heritage Council on Tuesday at its meeting in Poland passed a resolution submitted by the council’s Arab states rejecting Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. Ten countries voted for the resolution — a softened version of the original text submitted, reportedly due to pressure from Israel and the United States — with three opposed and eight abstaining.

The opposition votes came from Jamaica, the Philippines and Burkina Faso. The eight countries that abstained were Angola, Croatia, Finland, Peru, Poland,…
