Abbas says Palestinians refuse US role in peace process over Jerusalem recognition

(JTA) — Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinians will no longer allow the United States to have a role in the peace process due to President Donald Trump’s official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“It will be unacceptable for it to have a role in the political process any longer since it is biased in favor of Israel,” Abbas told delegates at an emergency meeting Wednesday of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul. “This is our position and we hope you support us in this.”

Abbas also said that Trump presented Jerusalem as a “gift”…

Abbas refusing to meet with Pence during VP’s visit to region

(JTA) — Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is refusing to meet with Vice President Mike Pence when he visits the region next week in the aftermath of the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Jibril Rajoub, a senior Fatah politician, said last week that Pence during his two-day trip starting Dec. 17 wanted to schedule a meeting with Abbas in Bethlehem on Dec. 19, but “such a meeting will not take place.”

“In the name of Fatah, I say that we will not welcome Trump’s deputy in the Palestinian territories,” Rajoub said Thursday, the day after President Donald…

Palestinians burn US and Israeli flags in riots over Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Protests erupted in Jerusalem and across the Palestinian territories hours after U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Demonstrators on Thursday burned tires as well as American and Israeli flags and threw rocks at Israeli security forces and Israeli cars as the Palestinian Authority called for a general strike, leaving stores shuttered and school cancelled.

Soldiers clashed with protestors in Jerusalem’s Old City, including at a demonstration at the Damascus Gate. A CNN video from the West Bank city Ramallah showed large crowds throwing stones and burning flags. In Nablus, protesters burned an effigy of President Donald Trump…

Trump will recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital but will not move the embassy for now

WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Donald Trump will recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, but will not open an embassy there for years, and will reassure Palestinians that his recognition does not impinge on their claims to the city.

It’s also likely to be years before an embassy opens in Jerusalem, top advisers to Trump said. The embassy currently is in Tel Aviv.

Three senior administration officials spoke Tuesday evening with reporters and outlined the remarks Trump is expected to deliver Wednesday at the White House.

The officials said Trump would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital because it is…

House passes Taylor Force Act targeting Palestinian funding for killers of Israelis

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill that would reduce U.S. funding for the Palestinians unless their official bodies stop subsidizing families of killers of Israelis.

The Taylor Force Act, named for an American stabbed to death in Tel Aviv in 2016, passed in a voice vote, with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle saying it was overdue. It would cut funding for all but a handful of humanitarian enterprises. Palestinians currently receive about $280 million annually from the United States.

The act, sponsored by Reps. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., and Doug…
