World Cup 2018: 7 Jewish Stories to Watch

(JTA) — Although soccer’s popularity seems to be on the rise in the U.S., this year’s edition of the World Cup might be somewhat of a downer for American Jews who enjoy watching the sport. The U.S. men’s team failed to qualify for the quadrennial tournament for the first time since 1986, and there are practically no Jews involved in the games this time around.

Argentina’s National Soccer Team Cancels Match With Israel

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — Argentina’s national soccer team canceled this week’s friendly match with Israel after pressure from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

After two months of pressure, the Argentinian team’s players late on Tuesday announced the cancellation of the match scheduled to be held on Saturday night at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem. The match was to be held just one week before the start of the World Cup in Russia.

Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldinho opens academy in Israel

RIO DE JANEIRO  — The Brazilian soccer idol Ronaldinho has launched a soccer school in Israel aimed at both native-born and immigrant children and youths.

Ronaldinho, who spent last week in the Jewish state, announced Thursday the establishment of the Ronaldinho Soccer Academy for children aged 6 to 16. The goal is to combine the passion and fun of Brazilian soccer with a strong teaching methodology and friendship values.

The school will launch in the summer as a camp for some 100 youths before opening in September.

Soccer star Lionel Messi on board as ambassador for Israeli startup

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — An Israeli startup has hired Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi as its brand ambassador.

Moshe Hogeg, a co-founder and co-CEO of Sirin Labs with Tal Cohen, posted a photo of himself and the world’s most famous soccer player on his Facebook page.

The company has developed what is says is an ultra-secure mobile phone using blockchain technology, which is a continuously growing list of computer records, called blocks, that are linked and secured using cryptography.
